Frequently Asked Questions
View all FAQsDo I need a license to drive a tuk-tuk?
Yes. You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with the motorcycle/tricycle category, plus your home license, plus Sri Lankan 'recognition' (issued at the airport AA office or arranged by the rental — typically LKR 4,000 and 30 minutes). Without recognition you cannot legally drive.
Is it hard to drive a tuk-tuk?
Easier than expected. Tuk-tuks are 4-stroke manual with a 4-speed gearbox and clutch. If you've ridden a motorbike or driven manual, you'll pick it up in 30 minutes. Sri Lanka drives on the LEFT. Stick to coastal roads and back routes for the first day or two before tackling Kandy or Colombo.
How fast can a tuk-tuk go?
Comfortable cruise: 40-50 km/h on flat roads, 30-40 km/h on hills. Top speed is 60 km/h going downhill but most rentals limit you to 50 for safety. Plan distances accordingly — Colombo to Galle is 4-5 hours by tuk versus 2.5 by car.
What if it breaks down?
Call the rental company's 24/7 hotline. Most have mobile mechanics across the island who can reach you within 2-4 hours, or arrange a swap to another tuk. Common minor issues (bulb out, chain slipping) are repaired by any local petrol station for LKR 500-2,000.
Can two people fit comfortably with luggage?
Yes for two travelers with backpacks/medium suitcases. Three is tight. Larger items (surfboards, big trekking gear) work with bungee cords on the rear rack. Some rentals offer 'family tuks' with extra luggage space.
Where can I sleep on a multi-day trip?
Sri Lanka has a huge guesthouse network — most are LKR 3,000-7,000 per night and bookable on Booking.com or by walking up. Tuk-tuk parking is free and safe at almost every guesthouse. For more adventure, some rentals include camping gear so you can stay at beaches and tea estates.
